A breeze...finally...

We enter July with a collective sigh of relief as the UK experiences some much-needed cooler weather following June’s heatwave, and just in time for the mid-point of Wimbledon

Meanwhile in Japan, the rainy season has come to an end and things are starting to heat up - and we're not talking about just the weather! Fans of a certain Wizarding World can finally rejoice with the exciting official opening of Warner Bros Studio Tour Tokyo last month! What’s more, Japan celebrates being ranked one of the ten safest countries in the world in the 2023 Global Peace Index – not that we’re surprised!

This month, we’re bringing to you not one but three People Make Places books up for grabs in our exciting giveaway, news of a special anime film preview, and more inspiration for later, all whilst pondering this month’s theme of ‘MUSHIATSUI’.

A typical Japanese summer

If the Japanese summer could only be described in a single word, you can bet that MUSHIATSUI would be the one the locals would choose!

Made up of the Japanese characters for ‘steam’ and ‘hot’, ‘MUSHIATSUI’ means ‘humid and hot’ and perfectly encapsulates the kind of weather that would make anyone opt to spend their afternoon lazing on a Japanese ‘engawa’ veranda with a fan and bowl of refreshing watermelon slices!

Whilst that does sound quite nice, the summers in Japan are perhaps one of the most vibrant and exciting times of the year in terms of events. Starting from July all the way up until the end of August, you can be sure to catch all manner of firework displays and summer festivals worth bracing the humid heat for! Our top tips for conquering the ‘MUSHIATSUI’ weather are: drink lots of water, have a hand towel at the ready to wipe off the sweat from your brow and carry around a 'uchiwa' fan or parasol (or both!)

Here's some of what we learnt this month:
1) It's the small independent businesses and people behind them that really make Tokyo special ⛰️
2) Mountain trekking in Hokkaido is a seriously underrated gem and a must for outdoor adventurers 🏕️🥾
