It's 'gonna' be a BIG May!

It has finally happened! Last week on 29th April, we saw the complete lift of all COVID-19 Japan border measures, meaning visitors are no longer required to show valid vaccination or test certificates to enter the country! Visit Japan Web continues but only as a convenient online way for travellers to get ahead of the usual arrival procedures, avoid the airport-hassle and hit the Japanese ground running!

It is truly shaping up to be an exciting month for both Japan and the UK! While our friends over in the Japan come towards the end of their Golden Week, we Brits are, of course, getting ready for the one of the most momentous events in our recent history; the coronation of King Charles III! The world’s attention will also turn to Japan later this month between the 19th and 21st May, when the leaders of G7 member countries will gather in Hiroshima for the 49th G7 Summit

To add to the celebrations, we’re bringing to you a special Japan cinema bonanza this month, with not one but TWO movie-themed giveaways; one right here in our newsletter and another over on our Instagram! All while giving you a much-needed refresher on the Japan Rail Pass, Postcard travel tips for foodies and artists and pondering this month’s theme of ‘ONKO CHISHIN’.

The answer lies in the past...

As good ol’ Confucius puts it, ‘A true teacher is one who, keeping the past alive, is also able to understand the present’.

Our phrase of the month this time around, ONKO CHISHIN温故知新, embodies the spirit of this. ‘Onko’ means ‘studying the past’ and ‘chishin’ means ‘new knowledge’; slap them together and you have the Japanese philosophical motto, ‘derive new knowledge from old experiences’.

In other words, lessons from the past will help guide the future! If you don’t know where to go next, the answer might lie in where you’ve already been and the people you’ve already met!

This month we talked to our Japan friends about how their pasts have shaped their future:

Here's some of what we learnt this month:
1) Everyone need a bit of Tomato Ponzu to spice up their life (and Japanese dishes!) 🍅
2) Saying 'YES' to curiosity can lead to unexpected and life-changing joys 🎨

That’s it from us for this month!
