Bring on the snow festivals!
The start of a new year is always a weird time as we slowly adjust and get used to the idea of writing 2023 instead of 2022. Before you know it, it's already February! But while we might scratch our heads over how January has flown by, Japan looks ahead to the peak of its winter season with the exciting return of many snow-themed festivals.
This includes the highly-anticipated Sapporo Snow Festival! After a 3-year hiatus, the week-long event is back from 4th February and, with Japan having hit new records of snowfall (again), is guaranteed to be more spectacular than ever!
This month, we're bringing to you Japan's cutest rabbit destinations, a rare treat for UK fans of Japanese cinema, and a dive into a more unknown side of Japan, all while pondering the theme of 'PEKO PEKO'.

Our 'Word of the Month' this time around has a very familiar ring to it!
Belonging to the same fun-to-say family of Japanese onomatopoeia words, 'PEKO-PEKO' describes...well, feeling 'peckish'!
It refers to that all-too-relatable sound your tummy makes as it cries out to be fed, prompting you to bend awkwardly over it and hope that it wasn't as loud as it seemed (...but always is). To say 'ONAKA GA PEKO-PEKO DESU', 'onaka' meaning 'stomach', means to be 'very hungry' or 'famished'.
Our 'Postcards from Japan' share their top food recommendations for when the 'PEKO-PEKO' feeling calls, whether down south in the Kansai region or up north in Hokkaido!
Here's some of what we learnt this month:
1) Contrary to what you'd expect, travelling with the kids can actually open up a whole new world of fun and exciting experiences! π¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦
2) Mashu soba and 'imo dango' potato dumplings are must-try's when visiting Teshikaga in Hokkaido ππ‘
