Starting the year off right!

While in the UK, the out-of-offices were slowly being disabled as January made its weary start, in Japan the shopfronts were being flooded with the much-loved 'fukubukuro' lucky bags, a new year tradition whereby the retail industry treats its customers to enticing mystery goodie bags.
Lucky for all of us, though, as Japan Airlines announced that they'll be returning to full twice daily operations from 12th Feb, and Finnair announced that they'll be bringing back their Osaka route with flights into Kansai International Airport from Mar 26th!

Otherwise, this month, we're bringing a Japan House giveaway, a refresher on New Year in Japan, and a curious arrival at Stonehenge, while we ponder this month's theme of 'SHINNEN NO HOUFU'.

New Year, New Me!
This month’s phrase may seem like a bit of a mouthful, but it is actually something very familiar to us all…

SHINNEN’ mean ‘new year’ and ‘HOUFU’ means ‘aspiration’ or ‘ambition’. Connect them together with the Japanese modifying particle ‘NO’ and, you guessed it, we have the Japanese equivalent of ‘New Year’s Resolutions’! 🎉

So cue the usual suspects…

Exercise: Conquer the Shimanami Kaido Cycling Route across Japan’s Setouchi Inland Sea!🚴‍♂️
Eat well: Feed your body with only the good stuff such as fresh seafood from the Hakodate Morning Market in Hokkaido!🦀
Self-care: Give your body a little TLC by relaxing in one of the many Japanese ‘onsen’ hot-springs towns around Hakone with the great Mount Fuji in the background!♨️

Whatever your 'SHINNEN NO HOUFU', Japan is sure to have you covered during your travels...and so do our 'Postcards from Japan' guests on recommendations!

Here's some of what we learnt this month:
1) Visiting Shiro-hige's Cream Puff Factory in Tokyo is a certified must for Ghibli-fans! 🧁
2) Japanese single malts could very well give Scottish whiskey a run for its money! 🥃
