Clear Blue Skies

November put us through a whirlwind of emotions from great news for all travellers, through what felt like the beginning of an ice age with storm Arwen, and back to winter uncertainty.

Meanwhile, people in Japan have been enjoying beautiful azure skies as the season of highest Mt. Fuji visibility began! We got wind of sauna buses in Himeji, and the red alert for cute culture fans with the Kawaii Monster Cafe reopening in Osaka

Let’s take a look at what else is going on with Japan right now, plan your Japan visit for later, and explore our Postcards from Japan on November's philosophical theme of MONO NO AWARE.

Goodbye for now...
Watching colourful leaves get blown away by gusts of autumnal wind and leave the once adorned branches empty is the essence of the ever perplexing - MONO NO AWARE 物の哀れ, or 'the awareness of impermanence'!

Autumn leaves bring vivid beauty but eventually fade away, making way for the next season. Often used for the miracles of nature which come and go with time, it's the appreciation of those short, special moments that lies at heart of Japanese thinking.

This philosophy has been rooted in Japanese culture since the Heian period (794 - 1185) and appears in literature from as far back as 1021!

This month we had a chat with our friends in Japan about their favourite places to enjoy the changes of seasons.

Here are a couple of things we learnt along the way:
1) Yamabushi training takes you out of your comfort zone and helps you appreciate life ⛰️
2) Gifu, known as the castle town of Oda Nobunaga, is a must-visit for samurai fans 🏯
3) Yakushima is a stunning island which was the inspiration for 'Princess Mononoke' 🌲
