A big pat on the back!

The race to make the most of the UK summer is finally over and we can put our feet up and unwind, as Japan similarly turns the page on Tokyo 2020 and closes a truly iconic chapter.

With snow settling atop Fuji at the earliest point in recorded history, double-shot vaccination rates nearing the UK's and a new electric moped sharing system live in Tokyo, things in Japan are go-go-go!

Let’s take a look at what else is going on with Japan right now, plan your Japan visit for later, and check out our Postcards from Japan on September's congratulatory theme of OTSUKARE.

"Well, aren't you looking tired today!"
In English, this would earn you a slap around the face but Japan's potential equivalent is possibly one of the most commonly used greetings of all!

OTSUKARE comes from the word 'tsukareru' meaning 'to be tired' and can be used to mean 'hello', 'thank you' and 'goodbye', all in one. Use 'otsukare sama desu' for a touch more politeness.

Often used in work settings, the idea is that by bowing and commenting that someone must be tired, you're also acknowledging and congratulating the hard work they must have done.
This month we caught up with our friends in Japan about what gives them their 'otsukare' pat on the back!

Here are a couple of things we learnt along the way:
1) Japan's food courts are a no-brainer for kids, with any type of noodle a clear fave 🧒
2) Chains like CoCo Ichibanya and Yakiniku LIKE have great vegan dinner options 🍛
3) Get yourself out to an island for a whole new perspective on life in Japan 🏝️
