Your intro to Japan's nightlife, taming Nara's deer, and unconventional museums

Here comes the sun

The month of May brought the UK rain, more rain and then a belter of a bank holiday weekend, but while we were dusting off our shorthaul travel plans, Japan was boggling at the first virtual tours by robot ninja guide, and plans for an urban zipline system in Odawara city.

Let’s see what else is going on with Japan right now, plan your Japan visit for later, and take a look at our Postcards from Japan on May's relatable theme of TSUNDOKU, or 'the art of buying books and never reading them'.

Oh, and before we forget - we've got some exciting things planned for the coming months so make sure to keep an eye on your inbox, too!

Eyes bigger than your bookshelf
Ever bought a book...and never read it? We feel you.
Whether it's books, music, podcasts or your Netflix watchlist, TSUNDOKU - originally a combination of the words for 'to pile up' and 'reading' - is a word used to describe the joy of an overwhelming (and unsustainable) interest in something.

With the world as it is, we might have to add travel plans to our TSUNDOKU list...
...and then go ahead and add a little more!

This month we asked our friends in Japan for their recommended reads to move to the top of the reading pile when thinking about the adventure of a lifetime in Japan.

Here are a couple of things we learnt along the way:
1) Nagano's Horakuan Temple retreat is waiting for you to come and find your zen 🧘
2) Kamishichiken and its ambient lanes make up Kyoto's oldest geisha district 👘
3) You won't easily forget a rowboat trip around the suigo canals of Lake Biwa 🚣‍♀️
