Hope on the Horizon

February had the UK smiling with first signs of warmer weather while the government's roadmap gave us a light at the end of the lockdown tunnel.
Meanwhile, Japan began the first stages of its vaccine roll-out, and the country erupted in plum blossoms - the first sign that spring is near - as the Kawazu sakura, the earliest blooming cherry blossoms, also made landfall.

Let’s see what else is going on in Japan right now, get planning your Japan visit for later, and read our exciting  Postcards from Japan on January's theme - NATSUKASHII, or, ‘full of fond memories'.

A bullet train down memory lane
That feeling when you uncover a souvenir you got years ago and the memories come flooding back. A smile that says 'that was pretty special' as you savour a particularly tasty flashback...
Japan has a word for that, and it's NATSUKASHII 懐かしい

It can be a homemade meal, a used train ticket, the smell of the sea, a bus journey and so much more - as long as it speaks to the joy of moments lost to the past but steeped in fondness.

Travelling is unbelievably rich in NATSUKASHII moments so we asked our friends about those unique Japanese experiences they still recall with a smile.

Here are a couple of things we discovered together:
1) Matsuyama has Japan's oldest hot spring and an original castle from the Edo period ♨️
2) There is one amazing spot for riding camels in Japan - Tottori sand dunes! 🐪
3) The Kii Peninsula has spiritual traditions that are over 1,200 years old! 🙏
