Autumn sweeps in!

I believe that we can safely say that autumn has arrived. The rain has started to pick and the temperatures has steadily begun to drop. You know it's autumn when even the sun starts to set earlier and earlier, but worry not! There's still so much to enjoy during this beautiful season. The local leaves are beginning to change and fall, you might notice them when outside for a walk or on your way to and from work. It is a good time to enjoy them as they do not last too long!

Japan has been enduring some rather warm weather as of late, and this means that the autumn foliage might be slightly delayed in turning to their peak. According to some forecasts, the earliest peak time for the foliage will be up north in Hokkaido, where temperatures will be cooling faster. The Kushiro area in eastern Hokkaido should see its peak around the middle of October, while the Tohoku area varies from the middle to slightly latter half of November. For Tokyo, expect to see the leaves close to the end of November, and for Fukuoka and Kyushu, it will be until December that they are in peak bloom.

September in Japan brought Respect for the Aged Day, a day to celebrate long life and elderly citizens throughout the country. Later in the month also was the Autumnal Equinox, marking the transition from summer into autumn, and the changing of the seasons.

In some other Japanese news, the Nintendo Museum, located in Kyoto, just opened its doors on the 2nd of October, and there was just annual Aki Basho Sumo tournament in Tokyo, held at the famous Ryogoku Sumo Hall!

This month we have delicious ramen, Yamanashi Prefecture and its famous mountain, and more - let's go!

Autumn has arrived!

Autumn has officially shown its face this year, let's see what kind of kigo will fit the season!

Our word this time is 秋の日! Read as 'aki no hi', this phrase be translated to 'a day in autumn'. Autumn days have their own special type of charm and beauty, let's see what sort of haiku we can make!

Haikus are made with a 17 mora combination in 5-7-5 style, with occasional 'kireji' punctuation.

Our first line has our seasonal word and is 5 mora  - 秋の日に (aki no hi ni)

Then a 7 mora line - 外に出てすぐ (soto ni dete sugu)

And lastly 5 mora -   紅葉狩り (momijigari)

Completed, our haiku reads as -

秋の日に (aki no hi ni)

外に出てすぐ (soto ni dete sugu)

紅葉狩り (momijigari)

On an autumn day,

I step outside,

And look for the changing leaves.

Haiku writing can be challenging yet fun, have you written one before?

Send a haiku you've made to our Instagram account @visitjapan_uk and we may feature them in future newsletters!

Here's some highlights of what we've learned over the past few months:
