Finally cooling down...

We enter October with quite a shock at the quick change of temperature! Following the past few weeks of rather hot weather, it's quite suddenly began to cool and rain again. Autumn seems to be quickly approaching.

Meanwhile in Japan, the heat may still be lingering, but the leaves are preparing to turn, and people are preparing their cameras and coats. For sports fan, September saw quite a bit of action! In the sumo world, the Aki Basho was held at the Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan, with Ozeki Takakeisho taking home the Emperor's Cup. In the F1 world, Max Verstappen took home another win at Suzuka Circuit in Mie, and the Brave Blossoms also took part in the Rugby World Cup.

This month, we’re bringing to you a few new fantastic regional travel guides and articles, there's going to be something for everyone!

Hunting for the best autumn views

As autumn approaches, the weather cools, and the leaves begin to change, it's time to look for the best autumn views, known in Japanese as 'MOMIJIGARI' or 紅葉狩り.

The word is made of three kanji characters plus an additional hiragana character. The first two characters together mean 'fall colours', and the last character means 'hunt'. Essentially, the phrase means 'to hunt for the fall colours'. Similar to what one does in spring when the cherry blossoms bloom, ‘momijigari’ means to look for the best views of the spectacular autumn foliage. From bright yellows, oranges, and reds, all around Japan there are fabulous spots for momijigari. While there are some quite well known spots around Japan, you can always hunt around for your own 'anaba', or secret spot! Be on the lookout for some articles in the future that will cover some idyllic locations!

Autumn in Japan is also quite the season in terms of things to do and places to go. The weather also begins to cool, but that doesn't mean it gets winter cold just yet! You still have a chance to visit some mountainous and northern areas before the snow begins to fall. Tohoku and northern Japan in autumn offer some of the best spots for stunning foliage, especially Yamadera in Yamagata and the Dewa Sanzan mountains.

Here's some of what we learnt this month:
1) Yamagata Prefecture really lives up to its name. And make sure to get some cherries on your way back as well!
2) Hachinohe in Aomori is a must go for those interested in exploring Tohoku and northern Japan. It's immersive culture and unparalleled nature make it a gem of the northern prefectures, no wonder it's called the "Northern Frontier"!
